Obituary for John F. Pixley

John F. Pixley died on Thursday, February 19, 2014, at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in
Lenox after a brave ten-year battle with Alzheimer's.
Born on July 22, 1925, in Pittsfield, the son of Francis J. Pixley and Marie Mandel Pixley, his
family moved to Stockbridge when he was an infant where his Pixley grandparents had a home and tearoom next to the Red Lion Inn. He graduated from Stockbridge High School 1943.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army in August and served two-and-a-half years in the
South Pacific in the Anti-Aircraft Division, discharged as a Sergeant.
Upon discharge, he joined his uncle's stationery store, E.P. Gowdy. In 1950, he was hired by
William H. Shandoff Stationery Store, founded in 1900. It was the largest stationery and office supply
dealer in Berkshire County. In 1962, he became manager and Vice President, and in 1976, upon
William Shandoff's death, he became President and Co-owner.
An avid golfer, he was a fifty-year member of Berkshire Hills Country Club, a member of
Kiwanis International, and served on the board of the Berkshire Hills Conference.
He married the love of his life, Gloria H. Proctor, of Lenox, in 1947.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, he leaves his beloved children and grandchildren: his son, Michael J. Pixley, of McKinleyville, California, his daughter, Debbie P. Fraker and her husband,
Christopher P. Fraker, of Nantucket; his granddaughters, Dr. Jennifer Fraker Agnello and Jillian Tomlinson Fraker of Nantucket, grandson, Christopher Porter Fraker, Jr., of Boston; great grandson,
Jackson Fraker Agnello; and his nephew, Craig R. Pixley, his wife, Jane, and their family of Pittsfield.
John was pre-deceased by his brother, Robert Pixley, of Pittsfield.
