Obituary for John O. "Jack" Phelps

John O. Phelps (Jack) 92, of Hinsdale, died Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at home. Born in Great Barrington on April 22, 1923 the son of the late Arnold C. and Rose Truelove Phelps. He retired from Wester Mass Electric Company (WMECO) after 36 years to spend time with his wife on Lake Champlain, VT.
John proudly served his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne "Screamin Eagles," he made over 30 jumps during WWII, he was injured at the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and numerous medals during his time in the service.
In his younger years Jack and Vi had property on Lake Champlain on which he built a cottage where the family enjoyed numerous years of fun. He enjoyed the water and boats and especially enjoyed taking trips by water to Canada. Jack was also a duck hunter and enjoyed cross country skiing. He was a hard worker and jack of all trades.
He is survived by his daughters; Melissa Phelps-Utter (George) and Suzanne Phelps, his grandchildren Jason Hall and Rebekah Hall, Christine Hopewood, Ian Phelps, Michelle Phelps-Hamilton, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great-granddaughter, his sister-in-law Lois Phelps and a brother and sister-in-law Maurice and Joanne Malo. He was pre-deceased by his wife; Violette Phelps, his son; John W. Phelps, his brothers; Arnold Jr., William and Sanford; his sister; Rose and also his sisters-in-law Clovia and Dorothy.
Jacks family would like to especially thank his caregivers: his granddaughter Rebekah, his great granddaughters Shavon and Hannah, his granddaughter's fiancé Doug and a good friend Nicole, for without them a promise to keep him home could not have been kept.
"When we hear a duck calling or see a sunrise, the quiet of an early morning or a magnificent sunset we will think of you."



FUNERAL NOTICE:
Funeral services for Jack Phelps, 92, of Hinsdale, who died Tuesday, April 5, 2016 will be private and burial will be at the convenience of the family at Randolph Veterans Cemetery in Vermont There are no Calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Jack may be made to the Andy Fund c/o Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Ctr., One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H. 03756, or in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield who is handling arrangements.
