Holden/Pittsfield- John E. Moran, 95, formerly of Pittsfield, died November 5 in Holden at the home of his daughter.
He was born in Lawrence, MA on May 7, 1927, son of William F. Moran and Helen M. (O’Brien) Moran.
He graduated from Lawrence High School. A World War II veteran, he was inducted on July 27,1945. He was stationed in occupied Germany with the 655th Topographic Battalion as a copy camera operator. Upon return to the states, he served as a company clerk with the 2nd Armored Division in Camp (Fort) Hood, Texas.
He was accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the GI Bill. In his senior year with one semester left to complete his degree, he left for one year to take a job as a quality control engineer with the Bolta Rubber Company of Lawrence. It was at this company that he met Ann M. Fiori, his future wife. He returned to MIT to complete his degree and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Engineering Administration.
He married Ann M. Fiori on September 17, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Church in Lawrence and they were married for 60 years until her death in 2016.
After graduation from MIT, he pursued a career with General Electric Company with assignments in Lynn, MA, Louisville, KY and finally in Pittsfield, MA where he and Ann settled down. His career with General Electric spanned 32 years having held a number of positions retiring as guidance program engineer in 1987.
After retirement, he traveled with his wife to many destinations in the United States and the world including Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Morocco, Russia and China. He enjoyed exploring the hiking trails of Berkshire County tracking along the Housatonic and Hoosic Rivers; reading World War II non-fiction histories; watching old movies, science, travel and biographies on TV.
He leaves his daughter, Joan Burr and her husband Thomas of Holden with whom he lived; son James Moran and his wife Suzanne of Belmont, Sister Patricia of San Francisco, CA. He leaves several grandchildren; David Burr of Marlboro, MA; Sarah(Burr) Stark and her husband Nicholas of Hopewell Junction, NY; Alexandra and Jackson Moran of Belmont. He is predeceased by a brother William Moran.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held, WEDNESDAY, November 9, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory. Entombment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield, MA. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
