Obituary for John Maruk

John Maruk, 92, of 29 Potter Mountain Road in Lanesborough died Sunday morning at his home where he had resided since 1924. Born on October 3, 1915 in Pittsfield, MA he was the son of the late Michael and Dorothy Nykorchuck Maruk. He was educated in Pittsfield schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1934. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp on November 14, 1939. He served during World War II with the 5th Airforce 95th Bomb Group as a tech sergeant cockpit gunner engineer in the European Theater and Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the American Defense Service Medal. He was discharged on October 19, 1945. He married his wife, the former Mary Mezzack on June 2, 1955 at St. Charles Church in Pittsfield. She died on July 21, 2005. Mr. Maruk was employed as lab technician with the Kimberly-Clarke Corporation in Lee for twenty-two years. He retired in 1978. A communicant of St. Charles Church, he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club, the Swiss Internees Association P.O.W. Group and the Caterpillar Club. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening, farming, fishing, camping and bird watching. He leaves two daughters; Stephanie E. Dastoli and her husband Ralph of Lanesborough and Christine A. Maruk and her husband Peter O'Connor of Rutland, MA. Two sons; John M. "Jack" Maruk of Lanesborough and Michael S. Maruk and his wife Diana of Manlius, NY. He also leaves two sisters; Anne Trzepacz of Pittsfield and Mary Stomsky of Hamden, CT and his five loving grandchildren; Sophia and Nicholas Dastoli, Delia O'Connor and Michael and Preston Maruk. Mr. Maruk was predeceased by a sister; Helen Polidoro and by his brother, Peter Maruk. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:15 AM from the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Charles Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours for Mr. Maruk will be held Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Dery Funeral Home. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to St. Charles Church or to the activities fund at the United Veterans of America Group Home in Pittsfield both in care of the funeral home. John's family would like to thank everyone at Hospice Care in the Berkshires for all of the care and compassion shown to their family during the past weeks.
