Obituary for John W. Bartels Sr.

John Whitman Bartels, Sr., 90, of 60 North Street #2, Dalton, passed away Tuesday, September 9, after a short illness.
Born in Dalton on March 9, 1918, he was the son of Florence Newberry and John J. Bartels. He graduated from Pittsfield High School and attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. He served in the Army during WWII, working as a medical supply officer in General Patton's Third Army. He earned a bronze star and five battle stars during his 2 � years in the European Theater, rising to the rank of major.
He was employed by the Pittsfield Milk Exchange from 1938 to 1965, where he was general sales manager. He went on to work for and retired from General Electric's ordnance systems after 17 years. Mr. Bartels spent many years serving his friends and neighbors as a Dalton Selectboard member and as Berkshire County Commissioner. He was active in numerous community organizations, including 4-H, the Dalton and Berkshire Central Pomona Granges, March of Dimes, Pittsfield Civitan, Dalton Rotary, Berkshire County Deputy Sheriffs Association, the American Legion, and Republican Town Committee. He also served on the board of Great Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was a trustee of the Berkshire County Extension Service and Eastern States Exposition. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Dalton.
He leaves his wife, Barbara Dioli Bartels, whom he married May 25, 1984; a sister, Jean Boring of Cincinatti, OH; a daughter, Suzanne Risley of New London, CT; a son, John W. Bartels, Jr. of Dalton; a stepdaughter, Sandra Dioli-Kumm of North Miami, FL; a stepson, Paul Dioli of Yarmouth, ME, six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Anita Scaffo Bartels, and a sister, Patricia Stone.
A service to celebrate the life of John W. Bartels, Sr. will begin at 9:30 AM Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the First Congregational Church of Dalton, with Rev. Robert Kyte and Father Christopher Malatesta officiating. Burial will follow at Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 PM and 5 to 8 PM at Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 East Main Street, Dalton.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to Friends of the Dalton Council on Aging, Great Trails Council-Boy Scouts of America, or the First Congregational Church memorial fund, in care of the funeral home.
