Obituary for Joan Topping Garivaltis

Joan Topping Garivaltis 78, of 37 Overfield Road, Pittsfield died Thursday, July 12, 2012 at her home surrounded by her beloved family, death followed a short illness. Born on April 28, 1934 in Pittsfield a daughter of the late James F. and Anna Mathis Topping. She attended Pomeroy Elementary school and was a 1951 pro merito graduate of Pittsfield High School; Joan was a legal secretary from 1951 to 1959 at the law firm of Cummings, Rosenthal & Reilly. She was employed from 1961 to 1995 at the law firm of Henderson & Brennan when she retired. She occasionally worked part time after retirement for Atty. Donald J. Brennan on special jobs. She was the wife of James P. Garivaltis whom she married on August 18, 1957; he died October 17, 2002. Joan was a lifetime member of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church and volunteered many years at St. Stephen's Table. She was also a member of the Pittsfield Cemetery Board and a member of the 1951 Pittsfield High School Class Reunion Committee. She enjoyed baking especially for her grandchildren, reading, meeting with old school friends and trips to Foxwood Casino. She also enjoyed and was proud of all her beloved grandchildren and attended all their functions. She is survived her two daughters, Bette-Anne Eddy and her husband Kenneth and Tracy Pieropan and her husband Jeffrey all of Pittsfield. Her five grandchildren, Mark K. Eddy, Taylor Eddy, Michael Pieropan, Lindsay Pieropan and Erik Pieropan. She was predeceased by three brothers, Reginald, George and Harold Topping and a sister, Mary E. Betit.

Funeral Notice: Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Hannah Anderson, pastor officiating. Entombment will follow at St. Stephen's Church Columbarium. There are no calling hours at the request of Joan, and those who wish may make a memorial contribution in lieu of flowers to St. Stephen's Church in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, which is handling arrangements.
