Obituary for Jane Maxouris

Jane Maxouris gently passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at her home in West Stockbridge.
A lifelong resident of Chicago, Illinois, Jane moved to West Stockbridge in 2010 to live with nieces, Irene Vassos and Alice Cruickshanks. She was born September 4, 1921, in Chicago, the daughter of Minas and Katherine Roumanas (aka Roumana), who emigrated to the United States from then Smyrna and Alatsata, Asia Minor (now Turkey) in December of 1915. Jane was an honors graduate of Austin High School where she was a champion tennis and golf athlete. She received her business degree from Wright Junior College and spent most of her career as an executive secretary working for the CEO's of oil companies headquartered in Chicago. She worked primarily for Cross Oil Company and in later years for the Federal Aviation Administration.
A world traveler, Jane visited almost every country but India and Australia. She was one of the first Americans to travel to China and came back with interesting stories and souvenirs. She collected match books from around the world.
She was a communicant of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago, where for many years she sang in the church choir. Jane was a member of the Philoptochos Society, a women's philanthropic organization. For the past five years she attended and was a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Pittsfield.
Jane's favorite pastime was watching tennis and golf tournaments, and she often said she wished she had become a professional golf player as a young woman. She was a competitive athlete. In 2015 she entered the 90+ category of the Annual Berkshire County Women's Running Race and placed 1st in her age category. She loved winning this last trophy! Her nieces and nephews remember her as a relentless tease, who booked no political correctness. She played a nightly nickel card game and liked to win.
Jane was predeceased by her parents and by her sisters Helene Maxouris Frazier, Daisy Maxouris Vassos, and Lucille Maxouris Mitchell, her godson, Minas Vassos and most recently her great nephew, Phillip Frazier Manes. She is survived by her sister, Ismene Maxouris Collins of Prospect Heights, IL and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was generous to her family, her churches, and gave to many charities over her lifetime.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Her family will receive friends Saturday, February 27 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 1304 North Street, Pittsfield. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by the newly ordained Reverend Joseph Gall. Interment will be in the West Stockbridge Town Cemetery. There will also be a memorial service at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago at a future date.
