Obituary for James E. Moynihan

James Edward Moynihan, 89, of Pittsfield died peacefully Friday, February 20, 2009 at Albany Medical Center after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on August 22, 1919 a son of the late Cornelius J. and Rose Moran Moynihan. He attended schools in Pittsfield and was a 1938 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He was a World War II United States Army Veteran serving from March 3, 1942 until being honorably discharged on February 17, 1946 as a master sergeant, serving with the Headquarters Battery 790th Field Artillery Battalion. He was a recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign ribbon and the Victory Medal.
James was employed by the former New England Telephone Company for 37 years retiring in 1982 as a foreman. Prior to World War II he had been employed at the General Electric Company. He had enjoyed wintering in Lakeland, Florida and was a communicant of Resurrection Church in Lakeland and Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield. He was a member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club, a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fly fishing. He leaves his beloved wife the former Rita M. Ryan whom he married at St. Mary's Church in Pittsfield on February 19, 1944. Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Dennis M. Moynihan and his wife Judy of Pittsfield, Robert F. Moynihan and his wife Eileen of Dalton and Gary J. Moynihan and his wife Barbara of Windsor. One daughter, Barbara A. Williams and her husband Kurt of Winsted, Conn. 14 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by his adored daughter, Kathleen Amos of Newport, New Hampshire in 2003 and by his two brothers, John C. Moynihan in 2007 and Frank Moynihan in 1986.

Funeral Notice: Funeral services for James E. Moynihan will be held Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 10:15 a.m. from the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, Ma. followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor. Burial will follow with military honors in the family plot at Saint Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at Dery Funeral Home will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials in his memory be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
