James “Cutter” Robert Galliher, 76 of Dalton, passed away June 21, 2022 at Berkshire Medical Center.
Cutter was born in Pittsfield, MA on August 2, 1945 to the late Edward and Margaret Poopor Galliher. He was a graduate of Wachonah Regional High School and attended Berkshire Community College. Cutter was a decorated United States Army Veteran, having served as a Forward Observer during the Vietnam War.
Cutter married the former Carolina Caliento on October 19, 1968. He was the Highway Superintendent for the Dalton Highway Department for many years, retiring in 2005.
A communicant of St. Agnes Church, Cutter enjoyed volunteering at the Dalton CRA and the Dalton Youth Center and was an avid sports fan. He was a member of the Dalton VFW and the Dalton American Legion.
Cutter could often be seen driving his truck slowly through Dalton keeping an eye on the town he so loved. Many residents experienced travel delays as a result.
Cutter is survived by his wife, Carolina Galliher of Dalton and children Kellie (Mark) Baumgartner of Dalton, Jayne (Eric) van der Valk of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Jim (Kellie Jean) Galliher of Dalton. He is also survived by his siblings Kathleen Burke of Dalton, Patrick E. Galliher of Lanesborough, and Joseph M. Galliher of Dalton; grandchildren Kaylee Baumgartner, Leo and Jason van der Valk, Millie Galliher, Maddie Sprague, and Marisa Hoag.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held, SATURDAY, June 25, 2022 at 9 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday, June 24, 2022 from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 E. Main St, Dalton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Dalton Ambulance or to Dalton Methodist Church Food Pantry in care of the funeral home.
