Obituary for Helen C. Bang

HELEN C. BANG, 85, formerly of Ocala, Florida, died Sunday, January 17, at
Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility, [in Pittsfield, Massachusetts] where she had resided the past three years.
Born in Mona, West Virginia, the daughter of Steven and Mary Shuman Chepko,
she graduated from West Virginia University with an associates degree in music and also
graduated from the College of Staten Island.
Mrs. Bang was employed as an Administrative Assistant with the City of New
York Department of Social Services. She retired in 1980.
Upon retirement, she moved from Staten Island, New York, to Ocala, Florida.
Mrs. Bang was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 284 in
Belleview, Florida, for which she received a 55-year service award, and was a member of
the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States in Ocala,
Florida. She served as Deputy VAVS Representative for Florida for the Veterans
Administration Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. She was also a member of the Pioneer Garden Club of Ocala and a member of the
Gardenia Circle in Ocala, as well as was a volunteer, Act IV, of the Ocala Civic Theater.
Her husband of 49 years, Carl J. Bang, Jr., whom she married August 12, 1946, in
Rockville, Maryland, died March 2, 1996.
Mrs. Bang is survived by a son, Stephen R. Bang, of Milan, New York; a
daughter, Mary H. Levitt of Dalton; a brother, Steven Chepko of Rock Hill, South
Carolina; five grandchildren, Ari J. Levitt, Jennifer Bang, Jaclyn Ekenberg, Carl J.
"C.J." Bang, and Zachary H. Bang, and a great granddaughter, Breck Ekenberg.
She was pre-deceased by a son, Lieut. Col. Carl J. Bang, III., late of Colorado
Springs, Colorado, who died in 2007.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The family of HELEN C. BANG will meet family and friends on Friday, January
22, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton. In lieu
of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Bang may be made to Alzheimer's Disease
and Related Disorders in care of the Funeral Home, 890 East Main Street, Dalton, MA
01226.
