Obituary for George D. Clark

George D. Clark, 98, formerly of Cole Avenue and Melbourne Place in Pittsfield MA, died peacefully on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Mclean Nursing Home in Simsbury, CT.

Born in Pittsfield, MA, on March 19, 1922, he was the son of George F. and Dorothy Desmond Clark. A 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High School, he was employed by GE for 46 years.

During WWII, he served in the 182nd General Hospital of the US Army, attended basic training in New Orleans, LA, spent the majority of his time overseas in England, and was in London in Trafalgar Square for both VE Day and VJ Day.

Mr. Clark was a member of First Baptist Church (where he was an usher for over 60 years), the GE Quarter Century Club, GE Pensioners Club, the Pittsfield Squares Dancing Club, Ralph Froio Senior Center, and Pontoosuc Country Club.

George loved his Boston sports teams; the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots. He was overjoyed (and relieved) to see his beloved Red Sox win a World Series in his lifetime. He loved square dancing, golfing and a lifetime of playing cards. Also, he loved playing baseball from childhood into his late 40's, when he hung up his glove from many years of pitching for James’ Jewelers in the Pittsfield Slow-Pitch Softball League.

He will be remembered and missed for his kind heart, sense of humor and wit. He was preceded by his wife of 65 years Cecile (St. Pierre) Clark, whom he married on July 29, 1950. He is also survived by a daughter, Deborah C. Bishop of Weatogue, CT; two sons, G. Peter Clark and his wife, Beth, of Killington, VT, and Mark F. Clark and his wife, Lucy, of Tolland, CT; four grandchildren, Brett Bishop, Brian Bishop and his wife Kia, Anton and Alexandra. He was predeceased by his sister, Hope Clark Adams.

George's family would like to thank the nurses, staff, and volunteers at McLean and McLean Hospice for their kindness and excellent care, with a special thank you to his dear friend Karyl for all the cribbage games, long talks, music, and laughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE: There will be a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to First Baptist Church, 88 South St, Pittsfield, MA 01201, McLean Hospice, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070, or a charity of the donor's choice.
