Obituary for Genevieve Mary Atkinson

Genevieve Mary Atkinson, 73, of 224 Eleanor Rd. Pittsfield died at home after a long illness on Monday September 19, 2016. Born in Pittsfield on December 20, 1942 the daughter of the late James F. and Mary Genevieve Coffey Magner. She was educated in local schools and was a 1960 graduate of St. Joseph High School. She went on to Framingham State College from which she graduated in 1964. She also obtained her master's degree from Lesley College. She graduated in 1964 from Framingham State College where she earned a Bachelor of Education. She also obtained her Master Degree in 1991 from Lesley College.
Genevieve was a teacher who began her teaching career in Norwood, MA and spent many years teaching in the Pittsfield Public Schools, specifically at Pomeroy Elementary and Crosby Junior High SchoolElementary School.
Genevieve was a longtime member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the Irish American Organization and Wahconah Country Club where she was an avid golfer. It was between through teaching and golfing that Genevieve made many lifelong friends whom she cherished dearly.
She enjoyed photography and taking scenic photos, traveling with her husband John, especially trips to the Villages in Florida and her yearly family trips to Cape Cod. She treasured her recently family trip to Disney World in 2013 with her grandchildren whom she adored. in Florida, exploring her Irish heritage and the beautiful Irish countryside on her trips to Ireland, Irish Music and a "Good Irish Hooly". On her trips to Ireland, she explored her Irish heritage and enjoyed the beautiful countryside as well as Irish music.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years; John J. Atkinson whom she married July 27, 1968 in St. Mark's Church, her daughters; Laurie K. Atkinson of East Greenbush, N.Y., Colleen M. Casucci and her husband Robert and their children Emma and Andrew all of Lenox, MA; her nieces and nephews; Nancy Jacobs and her husband Ralph and family of Quincy, MA, Kim Ford and her husband Alan and family of Houston, TX, Mark Shaw and family of Melbourne, FL, Sandra Oberacker and family of Middleboro, MA, Gerard Gerdin and family of Houston, TX, and her cousin Constance Sartini and her husband Thomas and family of Groton, MA, her brother; Kevin Wagner Magner and family of Dalton, MA, and many beloved friends.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
Funeral services for Genevieve Mary Atkinson of Pittsfield who passed away September 19, 2016 will be held Saturday at 8:15 AM from the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM at St. Mark's Church celebrated by the Rev. David E. Aufiero, Administrator. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in memory of Genevieve may be made to the American Lung Association or to St. Jude Children's Hospital both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield MA 01201.
