Obituary for Frank A. Blowe

FRANK ALFRED BLOWE, 80, of 37 Darlene Avenue, Pittsfield, died Friday morning at Craneville Place of Dalton.Born in Pittsfield, May 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Dr. Alfred T. and Helen Carroll Blowe, and was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. He graduated from Tufts
University, received his master's degree and a certificate of advanced graduate study
from Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut. He attended National Science
Foundation Institutes at Boudoin College, Smith College, and Fairfield University.
He served in the United States Navy Reserve during World War II.
Mr. Blowe was a long-time chemistry educator in the Pittsfield Public Schools
for 37 years, retiring in 1989. He began his teaching career in Pittsfield at the former
South Junior High School and then at Pittsfield High School. At the opening of Taconic
High School in 1969, Mr. Blowe was appointed chairman of its science department. In
1972, he as transferred back to Pittsfield High School as its science department chairman,
a position he held until his retirement. During his teaching years, Mr. Blowe was an
acting vice principal at Pittsfield High School, principal and vice principal of the
Pittsfield Public Summer School, and served as an advisor to several student
organizations. Mr. Blowe was a hockey coach at Pittsfield High School for ten years from 1956
to 1966, coaching five years outdoors and five years indoors, at the then new Boys Club
Rink. He was also a hockey official for many years. He was also employed for several years by Besse-Clarke and Maiorano's Auto
Driving School. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of its Holy Name
Society. He had also served as an Eucharistic minister and usher. He was a former long-
time member of Berkshire Hills Country Club, a 50-year member of the American
Legion, Boys Club Alumni, YMCA, the Massachusetts and NEA Retired Teachers
Associations, and Massachusetts Association of Science Supervisors. He was a RSVP
Volunteer at Berkshire Medical Centerr.
He is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor G. Lynch, whom he married on
August 21, 1954. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Finn of Cincinnati,
Ohio, and Catherine M. Hayes of Pittsfield; three sons, Frank A. Blowe, Jr., of
Richland, Washington, J. Christopher Blowe of Whitehall, Pennsylvania, and Charles
J. Blowe of Briarcliff Manor, New York, and nine grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for FRANK ALFRED BLOWE, who died Friday, September
28, will be Tuesday, October 2, at 10:15 a.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a
Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by Rev.
James K. Joyce, Pastor. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be
Monday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions
in memory of Mr. Blowe may be made Sacred Heart Church Memorial Fund or to
HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
Mr. Blowe leaves his nine grandchildren, Veronica Blowe, Nichole Blowe,
Eleanor Finn, Kathline Finn, Sean Hayes, Kevin Hayes, Ted Blowe, Donald Blowe,
and Brian Blowe. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Marion C. Blowe.
