Obituary for Francis Clayton "Sam" Smith, Sr.

Francis Clayton Smith, Sr. (Sam), 72, of Pittsfield Ma, passed away June 3, 2023 peacefully at home surrounded by family.

He was born in Pittsfield on March 19, 1951, the son of the late Frederick and Phyllis Smith (Smith).

He attended the former Rice Elementary school, North Junior High and Pittsfield High School.

Francis married Patricia A. Gavin on June 18, 1972.He worked as an Oil Burner Technician for Whiting Oil Company formerly known as Moody Energy in Dalton Ma for 40 years, then a short time at Bland Electric before retiring in 2001.

In his youth he was a member of various Drum & Bugle Corps. Skyhawks of Pittsfield MA, Skyliners from N.Y.C and the InterStatesmen of Rochester N.Y. In his later years he was a horn Instructor for Brass Action Drum and Bugle Corps. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing guitars with his brothers and friends.

He enjoyed Fishing, building models, listening to country music, and being with his family.

Francis is survived by daughter, Jean -Marie O'Shea and husband Shawn of Pittsfield; son Daniel J Smith Sr of Pittsfield; six grandchildren, Devlyn, Patrick, Austin, Shawn, Harley and Daniel. A sister Phyllis Smith of Dalton and brother Robert Smith of Pittsfield and two great -
grandchildren, Payton and Mackenzie. Many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Patricia A Smith on January 8, 2020 and his son Francis C Smith Jr on June 20,2005. He was predeceased by his father Frederick Smith; mother Phyllis Smith; two sisters MaryJane Lebrun and Marion Smith; three brothers Richard Smith, Frederick Smith and Charles Smith.

A special Thank You to his niece Lea Ann ( Leafer ) who he adored and loved to spend time with. Magda Mack who he thought of as a daughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held, Tuesday, June 6, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. Funeral home services will be held, Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made out to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and mailed to the funeral home.
