Obituary for Francis A. Slowick Sr.

DR. FRANCIS A. SLOWICK, SR., 105, a resident of 22 Central Avenue, Dalton,since 1995, died Monday morning at his home. Prior to coming to Dalton, he lived at Sugar Mill Wood in Homosassa, Florida from 1978 to 1995, and in Pittsfield and Lenox
from 1972 to l978.
Born in Greenwich, Massachusetts, January 19, 1901, he was the son of Polish
immigrants.He was educated in Palmer schools and was a 1919 graduate of Palmer High
School. In 1928, he earned his medical degree in orthopedic surgery from Tufts Medical
School and did his residency at Boston City Hospital.Dr. Slowick maintained his practice in Pittsfield from 1934 until 1978 when he
retired after 44 years. His first office was located on North Street prior to the 1940s after
which he moved to First Street.
He enjoyed surgical privileges at St. Luke's Hospital, Pittsfield General Hospital,
and Hillcrest Hospital, all of which have since merged to become Berkshire Medical
Center, as well as Fairview Hospital. He was a fellow of the American College of
Surgeons, and a past member of the Massachusetts Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Dr. Slowick is remembered as one who "revolutionized care with no touch strict
surgical care." He published a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine on the
early stages of septic hips.
He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church, a past member of the Pittsfield Country Club, and a past member of the Wahconah Country Club. He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed art, reading, and music. Dr. Slowick's first wife, the former Olive E. O'Brien, whom he married in 1934,
died in 1960. His second wife, the former Claire Morrison, whom he married April 4,
1964, died April 27, 2000.
He is survived by a son, Brian A. Slowick, of Mango, Florida, and a daughter,
Paula A. Francese, of Exeter, New Hampshire; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a son, Frank A. Slowick, Jr., M.D., late of Richmond, Massachusetts, who died October 19, 2005.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for DR. FRANK A. SLOWICK, SR., who died
Monday, October 23, will be Wednesday, October 25, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Agnes Church
in Dalton, celebrated by Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow in St.
Joseph's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in
memory of Dr. Slowick may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires or to St. Agnes
Church, both in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main Street,
Dalton. Dr. Slowick was pre-deceased by his four brothers and his six sisters. He leaves
many nieces and nephews, and caregivers.
