Obituary for Francis "Frank" McDonnell

Francis "Frank" Aloysius McDonnell, 92, of 56 Cole Avenue, Pittsfield, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Mount Greylock Extended Care.

Born in Philadelphia, Penn., on January 7, 1921, the son of William J. and Mary R. Denny McDonnell, he was educated in Philadelphia schools and was a 1939 graduate ofWest Philadelphia Catholic High School. Between high school and college, he served his country with the United States Navy. He returned to school and graduated in 1947 from the University of Virginia.

Mr. McDonnell was employed as an electrical engineer for General Electric Company, first in Philadelphia, then Bridgeport, Conn., then Schenectady, N.Y., and lastly in Pittsfield. He retired in 1983 after 4l years.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and had been a longtime member of the former St. Teresa Church.

He was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century Club, the G.E. Pensioners Club, and the Knights of Columbus-Lenox Chapter.

Frank was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. He enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling with his family, and visits with his grandchildren.

Mr. McDonnell leaves his wife, the former Elisabeth B. Knieriem, whom he married June 30, 1964. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Frank and his wife, Val, of Northampton; his daughter, Stephanie Haynes and her husband, Edward of Chelmsford; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kathryn, John, and Meghan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary McDonnell and thirteen nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother, William, of Maple Shade, New Jersey.

Frank will always be remembered as a fine, gentle soul with a wonderful sense of humor.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Francis "Frank" A. McDonnell will be held Saturday, March 16, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
