Obituary for Francis J. Harrington Dr.

FRANCIS J. 'FRANK' HARRINGTON, a local physician and longtime resident of Pittsfield, died early Friday after a long illness at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox.

For many generations of children, and counseled many parents, during his nearly 50 years of
Practice as a pediatrician and school doctor. He was also known to others through
His various community activities, which included his longtime service in board and
Leadership positions with the Counseling Center in The Berkshires, the Berkshire
Music School and Hillcrest Educational Centers. He was also a member of the
Medical staff at Berkshire Medical Center where he also served as a teaching
Faculty for residents and medical staff, and previously at Hillcrest and Saint
Luke's Hospitals. He also made many lifelong friends through his avocations,
Which included golf, tennis, and squash at the Country Club of Pittsfield, a communicant
of the St. Mark Church and the former St. Teresa Church, the American Academy of
Pediatrics, piano lessons at the Berkshire Community Music School, and bird-watching
and beagle-rearing, and was also an avid reader and historian. He and his wife enjoyed traveling through the United States and
Europe. Dr. Harrington was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on April 8, 1923 to Dr.
Francis J. Harrington and Harriet Deasy Harrington and attended Monsignor Coyle High
School and the College of the Holy Cross before enrolling at Tufts Medical School
from which he graduated with a medical degree in 1947. He enlisted in the Air Force
at the beginning of the Korean conflict, and was stationed for a number of years at
McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, where he served as a physician. He
opened his pediatric practice in Pittsfield in 1955, and practiced until 2003 part of the
time in partnership with Dr. Thomas Hayden. He was a founding member of Doctor's
Park on South Street in Pittsfield with a group of other physicians, including one of his best friends, Dr.Robert McInerney.
He met his wife, Irma Dondi Harrington, in Pittsfield, and they were married
January 22, 1955, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. . They were married for 53 years when Irma died two years ago. He is pre-
deceased by his brothers, Robert and Fred. He is survived by his
sister, Joanne Price, of Wilmington, Del., and his four children and their wives
and children: Sarah of Brookline, Mass., Peter and his wife, Michelle, of Holden, and
their children, Olivia, Owen, and Molly; David and his wife, Lisa, of East Greenwich,
Rhode Island, and their children, Charlotte, Sidney, and Isabel; and Anthony and his
wife, Pam, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and their children, Jack, Kate, and Natalie, and
many dear nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for DR. FRANCIS "Frank" J. HARRINGTON will be
Tuesday, March 29, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m, at St. Mark
Church celebrated by Rev. John C. Salatino, Pastor. Burial will follow in St.
Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, form 4:00 to 7:00 p.m, at the
DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr.
Harrington may be made to the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club or to the Berkshire Music
School, both in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
