Obituary for Florence C. "Flo" Keefner

Florence C. Keefner (Flo), 72, passed away peacefully, following a long illness on June 13, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Per her wishes, a private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

She was born April 19, 1950, in Pittsfield, MA, to the late Frank Monterosso and to Josephine Torra Monterosso. She was a first generation Italian, her parents coming over from Italy in the early 40’s. She attended Pittsfield schools. Her greatest jobs were being a wife, mother, and a grandmother

Flo married James Keefner in February of 1970, just four months after meeting him. They shared 51 years of marriage before his passing, only eight months ago…
Flo’s biggest wish was a family vacation, which came true in March of 2020—For their 50th wedding anniversary, her entire family, along with a few close friends cruised to the Bahamas where she and Jim renewed their wedding vows in a beautiful seabound ceremony.

Family always came first to Flo. She was a loving, nurturing, and supportive mom to Missy and Jimmy…she was a doting ‘Nina’ to Chaz, Chris, Katie, Dylan, and Jaden. She was fun and childlike when she was with them, making up songs and games as they played…and she was thrilled that her only granddaughter shared her love of baking. She was also ‘Bonus Nina’ to Gabe who she spoiled with lots of love and animal crackers. Flo’s friends were also her ‘family’.

Flo devoted her life to her family…besides her family, her hobbies and interests included shopping trips, casino trips, and lunch dates where she could visit and gab all day long. Flo was also incredibly artistic…whether it be cooking, baking, drawing, or coming up with whimsical poems or songs, she always amazed us how easy these things were for her.

Flo is survived by her mother, Josephine Monterosso; daughter, Melissa Keefner; son James Keefner, Jr and his partner Christine Robie; grandchildren, Charles Maxfield, Christopher Maxfield, Katie Maxfield, Dylan Keefner, and Jaden Keefner; brother, William Monterosso and his wife Kim with whom she loved spending time; brothers, Joseph Monterosso and Anthony Monterosso; sister Theresa Monterosso; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lawrence and Patricia Keefner. She also leaves her dearest friends Ernie and Lois Kornn, Richard and Linda Liccardi, Linda Kosinski, and Carol Kiley; former daughter-in-law Nathalie Grauer; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she adored.

She was preceded in death by her father Frank Monterosso; her parents-in-law, Lawrence and Marguerite Keefner, whom she so loved; brother-in-law Kenneth Keefner; and her beloved husband James Keefner.

Donations may be made to The American Heart Association in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
