Obituary for Evelyn Margaret Reynolds

Evelyn Margaret Reynolds, fondly remembered by many for selling penny candy to generations of children at Reynolds Store, died Thursday, March 16, 2023, at her home. She was 97 years old.

Born in North Adams on February 8, 1926, the daughter of the late Stephen George and Eva Decker Lenhardt Scholz, she was educated in North Adams and Adams Schools, graduating from the former Adams High School. She continued her education at Cooley Dickinson School of Nursing and received her nursing degree.

In earlier years Evelyn worked as a Registered Nurse at Cooley-Dickinson Hospital in Northampton as well as with private-duty patients in the Cheshire area. While her children were young she was a homemaker and stringer for the North Adams Transcript. In later years she worked in the family business, H.D. Reynolds General Merchandise, and continued there until 2019.

Evelyn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cheshire as well as a member of Franklin Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Cheshire Ladies Reading Club, and the former Cheshire Grange.

Her husband, Frank Stanley Reynolds, whom she married September 21, 1947, died April 21, 2006.

She is survived by four sons, Stephen D. (Sylvia Lines) of North Syracuse, N.Y., George E. (Karen Johnson) of Cheshire, Michael A. (Deborah Wilson) of Grosse Ile, Mich., and James C. (Susan Manson) of Terre Haute, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Reynolds (LJ Punch), Harold Reynolds (Darina Mayfield), Edward Reynolds, Jill Reynolds (Richard Frost, Jr.), Kate Dalzell (Michael), Joshua Reynolds (Jamie Olthoff), Cole Reynolds, Emily Johnson, and Molly Reynolds; and eleven great grandchildren, Bennett and Noah Frost, John and Catherine Dalzell, Hugo and Quincy Wattel, Will, Evie, Nora, and Silas Reynolds, and Levi Johnson; several nieces and nephews; and loving caregivers Jennifer, Felisa, Rosie, Liz, and Donna who made it possible for her to continue to stay in her home. She was predeceased by her brothers William John Scholz and Lambert John Lenhardt.

Interment will be in Cheshire Cemetery. A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at a later date.
