Obituary for Evelyn Bird (Netherwood)

Evelyn Netherwood Bird, 81 died peacefully at Berkshire Medical Center on Tuesday, July 12, 2022.

She was born in Adams on July 8, 1941 to Evelina (Gregoire) and John D. Netherwood; the family later moved to North Adams.

Evelyn graduated from Drury High School in 1959, and attended North Adams State College before graduating from Berkshire Community College.

She worked in many capacities in the Banking industry. She met the love of her life, Leslie Bird at a Halloween party in 1980, and later married on June 25, 1983.

Evelyn was a 42-year resident of Windsor, where she was a long-standing member of the Historical Society, and was involved in every aspect of town government and in the local social scene.

She served as Windsor’s Town Clerk, from 1993 to 2015. During her tenure, she was responsible for updating the Town Clerk Office to computers. She also served as a Town Assessor, from 2013 to 2015.

Evelyn was a licensed Justice of the Peace for 10 years. She really enjoyed officiating weddings, and had the privilege of marrying her son, Steven to his wife Valerie and nephew, Andrew to his wife Maura.

She was an avid reader and library volunteer, and holds the record for having borrowed the most books from the town library.

Evelyn was a 42-year communicant, a lecturer, and a Eucharistic Minister at the Saint Agnes Church, where she also was a member of its Finance Council and Fundraising Committee.

One of her greatest joys in life was the company of her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory: Her husband, Leslie Bird of Windsor; Her brothers: Francis Netherwood (Nancy) of Hampden, John Netherwood (Ellen) of Tustin, CA, and Richard Netherwood of North Adams; Her sons: Allen Bird (Raynee) and Steven Bird (Valerie) both of Windsor; Her nieces and nephews: Andrew Netherwood (Maura) of Hampden, Jeff Netherwood of Woodstock, VT, Laura Netherwood of Hampden, Jennifer Netherwood (Stephanie) of Oregon, and Greg Netherwood (Janet) of California; Her Grandchildren: Steven Bird (Sita), Valentine Bird, Chalis Collins (Patrick); Her great-grandchildren: Lily Bird and Hunter Collins; Evelyn was predeceased by her son, Michael Bird.


FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held THURSDAY, July 21, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow at Windsor Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be held, WEDNESDAY, July 20, 2022 from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 E. Main St, Dalton.
