Obituary for Ethel A. Eastland

Ethel Adeline Eastland, 86, died on May 7, 2021. Our Mom passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Pittsfield, MA., October 20,1934, she was the daughter of the late Frank Allessio and Irene Salvi Allessio.

As a young woman, Ethel obtained and enjoyed a job in England Brother Department Store. Her interest in fashion led her to New York City, where she received her college education in that field at Laboratory Institute of Merchandising.

As high school sweethearts, mom and dad maintained their relationship while mom was at college and dad served in the United States Army. (Making their life together 70 years!)

Ethel married the love of her life, our Dad, James Leon Eastland, Sr., on August 20, 1955.

Ethel also was employed as a banker at City Savings Bank for several years.

A communicant of St. Mark’s Church, she practiced with great faith, raising her family in the most devoted way. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

Her hobbies included: gardening, cooking, knitting, sewing, needlepoint, painting and photography. As well as traveling with her beloved husband.

She is survived by her husband, James L. Eastland, Sr., of Pittsfield. Daughter, Susan “Susie” Eastland McMahon of Dalton. Son, James L. Eastland, Jr., and wife Patty of Gloversville, NY. Brother, Robert Allessio and wife Helen of Pittsfield. Sister, Jean Duclos of Pittsfield, and her late husband Richard. Her Grandchildren, Audra L. McMahon, Teri McMahon, Adele Lanza and husband Steve, Gwendolynn Ossenkop and husband Pete. As well as five great-grandsons, Michael, Andy, Nicholas, Ian and Patrick, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and beloved friends.

Ethel was predeceased by her eldest sister, Irene Palmen. Irene’s husband, Gerry Palmen resides in the state of Washington.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held MONDAY, May 17, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mark Church, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Fedoryshyn, Pastor. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Marian Fathers or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield, MA 01201
