Obituary for Ernest G. St. Peter

ERNEST "ERNIE" G. ST. PETER, 81, of 252 Benedict Road, Pittsfield, died
Tuesday, November 17, at Berkshire Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bennington, Vermont, April 17, 1928, the son of Ernest J. and Pearl I.
Goodrich St. Peter, his family moved to Pittsfield when he was six months old. He
attended Pittsfield schools and was a graduate of St. Joseph Central High School.
A World War II veteran, he served as a Seaman with the United States Coast
Guard from August 22, 1945 until April 2, 1948.
Mr. St. Peter was employed by Gulf Oil as a delivery salesman. He retired in
1985 with 20 years service.
Following his retirement, from 1985 to 1992, he was a bus driver with the
Berkshire Regional Transit Authority
Previously, from 1955 to 1965, he managed the Tyler Street Restaurant and
former Tyler Caf�. Mr. St. Peter was a member of the Pittsfield City Council from 1961 to 1973.
He served eight years as the Ward 1 Councilman and four years as a Councilman at
Large. He was a communicant of St. Charles Church and had been a communicant of the
former St. Mary the Morning Star Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus
and was a Boys Club alumnus.
He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed playing pitch with various leagues in the
County. Family was the most important part of his life, always giving and making sure
his children and grandchildren were taken care of. Mr. St. Peter's wife, the former Mary I. Himmelman, whom he married July 31,
1948, died July 2, 1998.
Mr. St. Peter is survived by a son, Stephen C. St. Peter and his wife, Jodi, of
Pittsfield; two daughters, Sheila E. Toomey and her husband, Michael, of Pittsfield, and
Susan I. Holden and her husband, Kevin, of Richmond; seven grandchildren, Stephen C.
St. Peter, Jr., Shelley Pennington, Jennifer Barnes, Patrick Toomey, Brian Toomey,
Eric Holden, and Benn Holden, and seven great grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by a brother, Francis St. Peter, and a sister, Marie Gallagher.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for ERNEST 'ERNIE' G. ST. PETER, who died
Tuesday, November 17, will be Saturday, November 21, 10:00 a.m., at St. Charles
Church celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory, Pastor. Following cremation, burial will be
in St. Joseph's Cemetery. At. his request, there are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers,
contributions in memory of Mr. St. Peter may be to St. Charles Church or to HospiceCare
in The Berkshires both in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
