Obituary for Ella E. O'Malley

Ella O'Malley, 89, of Pittsfield, passed away on October 17, 2012. Her death
followed the loss of her husband of 66 years, James O'Malley, just six days prior.
Ella was born in Marshville, North Carolina, a small southern hamlet in the red
clay country. Growing up on a farm, she had dreams of the city. It was in Charlotte,
North Carolina, training as a secretary, that a larger dream came true. She met the love
of her life, Staff Sergeant James O'Malley, of the Air Force.
Wed in 1946, Ella and James came back to his hometown of Pittsfield to make their home, start a business, and a family. Daughter Nancy was born in 1947 and was joined by younger sister, Mary Beth, in 1954.
After years of saving, they were able to buy their house in Pittsfield in 1957. It
was there that Ella cooked, sewed, made hand-made braided rugs, and grew beautiful
flowers for her garden. In 1961, Ella began her career in Pittsfield as secretary at St. Luke's Hospital in
the Business Department. Later, she joined the Pittsfield Public School Department,
working for years as Executive Secretary to a series of Superintendents. It was chal-
lenging work that she loved especially since it was in the realm of education.
Following her retirement at 65, Ella found ample time to devote to her grand-
children and great grandchildren.
She is pre-deceased by her husband, James; brothers, Dale and Everett.
She is survived by her sister, Inez Haney Arant; her daughters, Nancy of Winthrop, and Mary Beth and her husband, Douglas Bell, of Winthrop- granddaughters,
Polina Bell of Winthrop and Elisa O'Malley of Alachua, Florida; great grandsons,
Gabriel, Brady, and Nathaniel, as well as many nieces and
nephews in New England and in the South.
