Egidio "Ed" Altobelli, 84, of 79 Velma Avenue, died Sunday, December 7, 2014, at home unexpectedly.
A life long resident of Pittsfield, he was born on January 23, 1930, and was the son of the late Egidio and Lucia Eramo Altobelli. He attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Pittsfield High in 1947. He went on to complete the apprentice program at General Electric in Pittsfield.
He was a veteran; having trained at Fort Dix and graduating from leadership school, he then serving during the Korean War attached to the 99th Infantry Division and was also stationed in Iceland for over a year involved with early warning detection.
He was employed at General Electric Corporation for over 40 years in their large power transformer division where he was a Senior Designer. He was responsible for designing some of the most unique and complex transformer systems that supplied energy to the North American power grids. He was known at GE for his strong leadership, technical expertise and high quality work. He was nominated for the Sector Centennial Award in 1978 for his contribution to this field.
He enjoyed home improvement projects, building computers, researching and providing welcomed advise, and in his earlier years was a "jack of all trades" handyman doing the many additions and renovations to his home. Until more recently, he enjoyed attending and dancing at the Sunday night functions at the ITAM Lodge. He especially loved spending time with his family.
His loving wife Connie predeceased him in June 30, 2004. They had been married for over 54 years.
He is survived by his three children, Dr. David Altobelli and his wife Rosemary of Hollis, NH, Terry Blade of Danvers, MA, and Thomas Altobelli and his wife Kathleen of Redondo Beach, CA.. He had five grandchildren; David, Chris, Lori, Kevin and Jessica. He also leaves three sisters; Pauline Sweener of Pittsfield, Mary Allen of Pittsfield, and Laura Stubbs of Burlington, MA., and his fourth sister Julia Pinyone of Pittsfield (predeceased 1999).

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral Services for Egidio "Ed" Altobelli will be held Saturday, December 13, at 11:00 a.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with Pastor Sigmund Sadzinski officiating. Calling hours will precede the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Make A Wish Foundation in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
