Obituary for Edwin "Shorty" Shears

Edwin A. "Shorty" Shears, also known as "Captain Ed", 88, passed Sunday, November 25, 2012, at Berkshire Medical Center. He was a resident of Springside
Nursing Home in Pittsfield, a former resident of Side-By-Side Assisted Living in Pittsfield, and before that, a long time resident of his own home at 48 Lanesborough Road, Cheshire.
Born in Pittsfield on November 6, 1924, he was the son of Alfred G. and
Margaret Kleiner Shears. He attended local Pittsfield schools, graduating from
Pittsfield High School in 1943.
He entered the U.S. Naval Seabees in 1943, serving on the Solomon Islands in the
South Pacific, and was discharged in 1946.
He attended and graduated from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois, in
1947. After returning home, he worked at Eaton Paper Co. for a couple of years, then
joined General Electric Company in 1950, retiring in 1986. After working as a testman for thirty six years, he then worked part-time as a school bus driver with E.W. Degree Transportation for several years.
He was a member of the Cheshire Baptist Church, V.F.W. Post 9396, Berkshire
County Forest Warden's Association, Fire and Police Departments, G.E. Quarter Century
Club, and the Hoosac Hose Company for thirty-eight years.
His wife, the former Olive L. Rosier, whom he married on September 23, 1950,
passed away on March 22, 1998.
He leaves two sons, Steven E. Shears and his wife, Julie, of Peru; and David A.
Shears and his wife, Joan, of Adams; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Edwin A. "Shorty" Shears will be held Saturday, December 1, at 10:00 a.m, at DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME with Rev. William D. Furey officiating. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, from
5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of
Mr. Shears may be made to Hoosac Hose Company, Cheshire Baptist Church, or the
Adams Ambulance Service, all in care of the Funeral Home, P.O. Box 445, Cheshire.
The Shears Family would like to thank everyone for all of their love and support,
and cordially invites everyone to continue the celebration of Ed's life at the Cheshire
Fire Station immediately following burial.
