Obituary for Edward Steven McHugh

Edward S. McHugh, aged 83, passed away on Sunday morning while in the arms of his loving wife after a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer.

Ed was born in Pittsfield on January 9, 1938 to Edmund P. McHugh and Katherine Michlisin McHugh. He attended Pittsfield schools and was a 1955 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Immediately following his graduation, Ed enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country. He earned the rank of SFC before a medical issue curtailed his career and resulted in an honorable discharge.

After returning to Pittsfield with his wife and newborn daughter, Ed became employed by the United States Postal Office, serving in various positions until he retired as the Lanesborough Postmaster in 1993. After retirement, Ed worked as a gate attendant for Tanglewood for more than 25 years. He was a member of Hope Advent Christian Church where he served as both a deacon and an usher. He loved meeting and greeting people and had a ready smile for everyone.

Ed’s love for his country, his garden, and his Red Sox were surpassed only by his love for God and for his family. He was married to the former Annie Ooms for more than 61 years. In addition to his wife, he leaves his four daughters: Karen McHugh, of Pittsfield; Susan Seyfried and her husband, Douglas, of Southport, CT; Diane Sadowski and her husband, Michael, of Arlington, MA; and Linda Desarro and her husband, John, of Longmeadow, MA. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren: George, Grace, and Douglas Seyfried; AJ, Eddie, Faye (his “birthday buddy”), and Jed Desarro; and Jack and William Sadowski. In addition, he leaves his brother, Joseph McHugh, of Palm Bay, FL, his sisters, Mary Reger, of Concord, NC, Kathy Bockis, of Schenectady, NY, and many extended family members.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed’s memory to Hospice Care of the Berkshires, St. Jude’s, or Hope Church, in care of the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.

The family would like to thank his physician, Dr. Craig Kirby and his nurses from Hospice for their compassionate care of Ed, and his brother, Joe, for making the trip to see him through his final days. Although we miss him terribly, we take comfort in knowing that Ed is in heaven with his Lord.
