Obituary for Edmund J. Germanowski

Edmund J. Germanowski, a long-time resident of Pittsfield who wintered in Sun City, AZ following his retirement, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2014 at the age of 92. A son of the late Ludwik and Bronislawa Brzozowska Germanowski, he was born in Pittsfield, where he raised a family of six children with his wife of 66 years, the former Grace Schwab. After graduating from Pittsfield High, he served in the Merchant Marines during WWII, and then started his career as a tool-and-die maker at General Electric, from which he retired in 1985 after 38 years of service. He was a long-time and active parishioner of Holy Family Church, and sang in the church choir for many years; after the church closed he joined St. Joseph's parish. Edmund was a 4th-degree Knight of Columbus, helped with the Boy Scouts, and volunteered in a number of community programs after he retired, including Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Elder Services, helping to transport older adults to their medical appointments and settling them back into their homes after hospitalization. Mr Germanowski was an avid hobby enthusiast: his interests included photography, gardening, coin and stamp collecting, playing bocce, the Red Sox, astronomy, planning for the family's annual 2-week camping trips to the beach in Rhode Island, and later visiting his children across the country. The Germanowskis enjoyed a memorable cruise to Alaska to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Edmund was preceded in death by his eight siblings, and is survived by his wife, Grace, and their six children: Paul Germanowski and his wife Ann (Isle La Motte, VT), Joan Harris and her husband Sid (Peoria, AZ), Therese Eby and her husband Jim (Santa Clara, CA), Susan Musacchio and her husband Rich (Westford, MA), Rosemarie O'Gorman and her husband Frank (Peoria, AZ), and Mark Germanowski and his wife Heidi (Pittsfield, MA), as well as six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
