Obituary for Edgar W. Phelps

Edgar William Phelps, 85, a resident of 70 Glenwood Avenue, Pittsfield,
since l949, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at Hillcrest Commons.
Born in Pittsfield on June 22, 1927, the son of Edgar C. and Katherine F.
Hogan Phelps, he attended St. Joseph Central High School, the University of
Massachusetts at Lowell, and Northwestern University.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Phelps enlisted with the United States Marine
Corps on May 16, 1945. He served overseas from December 1945 to January 1947.
He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on October 7, 1947.
Following his military service, Mr. Phelps went to work for the City of Pittsfield
as a Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor in the Department of Public Works. He then
transferred to the Massachusetts Highway Department, District I Office, where he was
District Traffic Engineer and District Survey Supervisor. He retired from the
Commonwealth with 37 years service.
Mr. Phelps was a communicant of St. Joseph Church and had been a longtime
communicant of St. Mary the Morning Star Church.
He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the
First Marine Division Association.
He was also a member of the Berkshire Family History Association, Inc.
He enjoyed traveling, and he and his wife visited all fifty states.
Mr. Phelps leaves his wife, the former Rita May Mitchell, whom he married
February 12, 1949.
He is also survived by five sons, Patrick C. Phelps and his wife, Diane, of
Crystal River, Fla., Paul E. Phelps and his wife, Ginger, of Pittsfield, Brian M. Phelps
and his wife, Susan, of Lanesborough, Mark W. Phelps of Pittsfield, and Kevin J.
Phelps of Pittsfield; two daughters, Moira A. Phelps of Pittsfield, and Teresa E. Hallett
and her husband, David, of Pittsfield; as well as fifteen grandchildren and nine great
grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Mr. Phelps' special health care team, Tina, Gina,
Bonnie, and David.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
Funeral services for Edgar William Phelps will be held Monday, April 15, 2013,
with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m., at St. Joseph Church celebrated by Rev.
Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the DERY FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marine Corps League
Toys for Tots in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
