Obituary for Dorothy "Dot" M. McKay (Hughes)

Dorothy M. McKay, 93, passed peacefully on January 21, 2021 at Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen, NH after a period of declining health. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on May 4, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Loretta Hughes.

Dot was a graduate of Becker Junior College, and worked for many years at Besse-Clarke and England Brothers as a bookkeeper. A resident of Pittsfield for more than 70 years, she moved to Rhode Island and then Canterbury, NH to be near to, and then lived with, her son and beloved granddaughters.

Dot loved reading, knitting and playing cards with the family. She loved butterflies and had a tremendous green thumb, especially with growing difficult African Violets. A woman of great faith with special devotion to St. Jude, she was a long-time communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield.

She is survived by a sister, Lucille L. Hughes of Boscawen, NH, a daughter, Mary D. Reynolds of New Port Richey, FL, a son, W. James McKay and his wife Diane C. McKay of Canterbury, NH, and two granddaughters, Jessica E. Rodman and her husband Evan H. Rodman of Woonsocket, RI and Kathleen H. McKay of Canterbury. Additionally, she has four step-grandchildren, Stacey E. Cordeiro of Boston, Daniel A. Cordeiro of New York City, and twins Mark A. and Matthew A. Bertrand of Canterbury. She will also be missed by the family pets, Sammy, Lily, Lucifur and Maka.

Donations may be made to Merrimack County Nursing Home where she received excellent care over the last months of her life or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Funeral services will be private and there will be no calling hours. Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield, MA is handling the arrangements.
