Obituary for Donald D. Soule

DONALD D. SOULE, 77, of 46 Merriam Street, Pittsfield, died Sunday, June 12,
at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility where he had resided since May.
Born in Pittsfield on July19, 1933, the son of the late Branning and Charlotte Young Soule, he was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1951 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
A Korean War veteran, he enlisted with the United States Navy after graduation on June 28, 1951, and served as a Petty Officer aboard the USS Siboney and the USS Midway, both aircraft
carriers, and the USS Kula Gulf. He was honorably discharged on April 19, 1954. He then served with the United States Naval Reserve until 1959. He attended trade school to become an electrician and in 1956 received his Master
Electrician License. He later taught the apprentice electrician course in Springfield.
Mr. Soule was employed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 284. In 1968, he was elected Business Manager until retiring in 1988 when it merged with the Springfield Council. He continued to represent his members there. He was a member of the Berkshire County Building Trades Council and served on the Massachusetts State Labor Council. In 1983, Mr. Soule was honored by the Berkshire Central Labor Council as Local Union Man of the Year.
Mr. Soule helped found the Berkshire County Labor Credit Union and served as its Treasurer and Manager from 1970 to 1989.
From 1984 until 2009, he was part owner of Valley Park Lanes and of Branning's Restaurant both in North Adams.
He also drove for the Berkshire Eye Center for several years. Mr. Soule was a member of the Pittsfield Economic Development Authority and the Pittsfield Redevelopment Authority where he had been Past Chairman. He also
served on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries and held the office of President,
was on the Board of Directors of the Berkshire United Way, and served as a trustee of North Adams State College (now M.C.L.A.) from 1978 to 1982. An avid hockey fan and hockey player, he also officiateded high school and college hockey in the 1970s
and 1980s, and was a past secretary and treasurer of the Berkshire County Chapter of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association.
He also enjoyed golf and was a member of the Skyline Country Club.
Mr. Soules' wife, the former Barbara A. Duggan, whom he married April 24, 1954, in St. Mark Church, died January 6, 2006.
He is survived by a son, David J. Soule of North Adams and a daughter, Deborah
Soule-Smith and her husband, Gerald of Rockledge, Florida.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for DONALD D. SOULE will be held Thursday, June 16, at 8:15
a.m., from DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m., at
St. Mark Church celebrated by Rev. John C. Salatino, Pastor. Burial will follow in St.
Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the
Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Soule may be made to
HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
