Obituary for Dean S. Nikitas

Dean Nikitas, 71 of Pittsfield, MA passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2023 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

He was a 1969 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He received a bachelor degree in Geography from Middlebury College in 1973. He worked as a surveyor, deed researcher, topographer and cartographer until he returned to school to earn his Teacher Education Degree from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 2003. He taught at Eagleton School and Pittsfield High School from 2006-2007. In 2009 Dean became a Certified Nurse Assistant. He cared for people until his own health began to deteriorate in 2012.

Dean was a sweet, kind, thoughtful man. He loved to play guitar and keyboard. He had a brief stint with the trombone, but luckily gave it up! He was an avid reader. He enjoyed Herman Melville’s writings to such a degree, he became a docent at Arrowhead for several years. He was active in the Greek Orthodox Church where he enjoyed helping out at the festivals.

Dean had a very special relationship with his Aunt Sophia. They loved to get coffee together and chat about the world. As his illness progressed, they would talk on the phone, sometimes multiple times per day. She will miss him very much.

Dean is survived by his brother Steven Nikitas, his cousin Stephanie Lemnios and her husband Zach Lemnios, his Aunt Sophia Scutakes, his niece Tatiana Nikitas Saunders and her husband West Saunders, his great niece Rylee Saunders and his great nephew Owen Saunders. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. S. Peter and Calleen Nikitas. His brother Peter Nikitas died just a few days after him.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held, SUNDAY, January 29, 2023 from 4 to 8 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. Graveside services will be held, MONDAY, January 30, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Pittsfield Cemetery in the Greenlawn section. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet inside the cemetery gates at 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Parkinson’s Foundation in care of the funeral home.
