Obituary for Dean T. Niarchos

WORLD WAR II HERO

Dean Thomas Niarchos, 90, of Wellesley Street died peacefully Monday night at his daughter's home in Wheaton, IL where he resided since May.
He was born December 15, 1918 in Chicopee Falls, the son of Thomas and Ellen Petras Niarchos. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1937, from Clark University in 1950 with a Bachelors of Business Administration and a MBA from University of Massachusetts in 1976. At Clark University he was captain of the tennis team for two years (1949 and 1950) winning the division tennis championship both years. Mr. Niarchos was not only a tennis champion but also an avid ping-pong player winning the Berkshire County championship in the mid 1930's. He continued playing ping-pong, tennis and golf up until this past summer where he frequently beat men half his age.
A WWII hero and one of five brothers who saw combat overseas, Mr. Niarchos served with the 8th Air Force in England as a radio operator and aerial gunner on the B17 flying fortress. He flew 35 combat missions over Germany including his second mission where he survived an emergency landing after being shot down over Brussels. He was honorably discharged at rank of Tech sergeant and awarded the air medal with five oak leaf clusters among other citations.
Mr. Niarchos was employed by the General Electric Co. for 43 years as a Manufacturing Administrator in GE's Ordnance Systems. After retiring in 1983, he rekindled his golf passion, joining the Berkshire Hills Country Club where he scored a hole-in-one on the 17th hole in 1992.
He was married to the late Corinne Elizabeth Dayton on February 14, 1953, whom passed away in 1987. He will be missed dearly by his long-time companion Norine Branch of Longmeadow, MA; four sons, Gary T. Niarchos and his wife Pat (Truen) of Lilburn, GA, Thomas D. Niarchos and his wife Natalie (Meyers) of Longwood FL, Dean P. Niarchos of Charlottesville, VA, and Michael D. Niarchos and his wife Beth (Webb) of Marshfield, MA; two daughters, Laina N. Stilwell and her husband Rob of Wheaton, IL and Pamela Hensler and her husband Brian of Wheaton, IL; 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, John, Steven, George, Peter and Michael, and by one sister, Lola.
He was a communicant of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, and a member of the American Legion, GE Pensioner's Club, Berkshire Hills Country Club, and 486 Bomb Group Association - 8th Air Force.
Having been born two months after the 1918 Red Sox World Series championship, Dean was thrilled to have lived long enough to see his team win the World Series in 2004 and even more thrilled he made it to 2007. He loved the Berkshires, frequently saying "it's the only place on earth with four robust seasons." His poetic wit and witticisms, the ease in which he could go into song, his passion for golf and for life, and mostly his love and devotion for his family will be missed by all who knew him.

Funeral Notice: Calling hours at the Dery Funeral Home will be Sunday from 4-7pm, with a service celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church in care of Dery Funeral Home.
