Obituary for David J. Tierney, Jr.

David Joseph Tierney, Jr., aged 88 of Pittsfield, MA, died peacefully October 18, 2022 at his home with his wife Mary of 67 years by his side.

Born in Pittsfield on January 2, 1934, he was the son of David Tierney, Sr. and Jennie Freehoffer Tierney.

He graduated 1951 from St. Joseph's High School and then went on to graduate from UMASS in 1955 and RPI in 1957 where he received his master's degree in Civil Engineering.

His love for building started many years earlier. At age 8 he began working in construction with his father. He went on to create his own construction company David J. Tierney, Jr. Inc. in 1959. He and his company built many of the most prominent buildings in Berkshire County. His greatest joy was building the Monastery for the Sisters of the Visitation in Tyringham, MA.

He was a board member of the Boys and Girls Club and the College of Our Lady of the Elms.

During his life, David visited all seven continents and over 100 countries. He loved his Irish home and his many Irish friends. He also loved playing cards and games with his family.

David is survived by his loving wife, Mary Bailey Tierney of Pittsfield. His children, Ann T. Moore of Charleston, SC, Karen T. Hunt and husband Bernie of Stephentown, NY, Mary Pat Roy of East Greenbush, NY, Jennifer T. Stokes and husband Austin of Pittsfield, David J. Tierney III, and wife Laurie of Pittsfield, and Kevin F. Tierney and wife Kim of Needham, MA. Eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. One of ten children, he is survived by his two sisters, Grace Jones of Pittsfield and Rosemary Brennan of Marblehead, MA.
David will be dearly missed by his family and friends. His life will be celebrated by many.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held, TUESDAY, October 25, 2022 at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, celebrated by Rev. Msgr. Michael Shershanovich, Pastor. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held, MONDAY, October 24, 2022 from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Visitation Monastery Mon Deux Coeurs in care of the funeral home.
