Obituary for David R. Powell

DAVID R. POWELL, 82, of Dalton, died peacefully at home on Thursday,
December 4, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Pittsfield on September 16, 1926, he was the son of Myrtis Vincent and
George Powell. He was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 in the 7th Infantry
Division in Okinawa and Korea. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant.
Mr. Powell worked for General Electric from 1947 until his retirement in 1987.
At the time of his retirement, he was a unit manager in the Field Engineering Division of
Ordnance. After retirement, he worked for a number of years as the co-director of the
IUE and GE Training and Development Center.
Mr. Powell was very active in a number of community organizations. He was a
founding member of the Dalton Council on Aging and served on its Board for many
years. He also served as co-chair of the Dalton Triad. He was on the Board of Elder
Services of Berkshire County and was a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee of
the Executive Office of Elder Affairs. Mr. Powell was the Dalton Town Moderator
from 1988 to 1993. He was also very involved in Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton,
serving in a variety of capacities through the years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, his swimming pool, and spending time with
his grandchildren. Mr. Powell leaves his wife, Carol Amuso, whom he married January 10, 1969, at Grace Episcopal Church; a sister, Patricia Rash of Waco, Texas, and a brother, Wayne
Powell of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He leaves his daughters, Robin Higgins and her
husband, Larry, of Dalton; Sherri Dodge and her husband, Aaron, of Oakland, Maine,
and Christina Forbes and her husband, Michael, of Middletown, Maryland. He leaves a
son, Geoffrey Powell, and his wife, Shelby, of Hinsdale. He also leaves five grand-
children, Meghan (Higgins) Nelson, Hannah and McKenzi Powell, and Nicholas and
Rachel Forbes.
He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Helen "Honey" Jahn Roberts.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A service of Christian Burial for DAVID R. POWELL, who died Thursday,
December 4, will be held Wednesday, December 10, at 11:00 a.m., at Grace Episcopal
Church, with Rev. Daina Salnitis, Rector, as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Ashuelot
Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at DERY-FOLEY
FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory may be made to the
Friends of the Dalton Council on Aging or to Hospice Care in the Berkshires both in care of the Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 East Main
Street, Dalton.
