Obituary for David H. Olds Sr.

David H. Olds, Sr., 60, of 26 Maple Street, Hinsdale, MA died at his home on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Pittsfield, Ma. on January 13, 1952 a son of the late Howard and Doris Barr Olds. He was raised in Hinsdale and was a graduate of Wahconah Regional High School in 1970. He worked several construction and maintenance jobs throughout his career. He is a 42 year member of the Hinsdale Fire Department, serving as Chief from 1978 until 1982, and Assistant Chief from 1993 to 2003. He was a longtime member of the Hinsdale Muster Team, serving as driver and team captain for many years. He was a vital member to the New England Muster Association serving as its president from 2000 until 2004. His passions were working at the fire station; working on the beloved 1937 Buffalo muster truck, and restoring a 1929 Buffalo fire pumper. He was a fixture in the garages of his sons where he was the key component to their racing endeavors at Lebanon Valley Speedway. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and was a big fan of Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
The joys of his life were racing, firefighting, carpentry, hunting and spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed the Dukes of Hazard, as well as reading and watching westerns. He is survived by three sons, David H. Olds, Jr. and his wife Brandi of Pittsfield, Daniel D. Olds and his wife Kristle of Hinsdale and Douglas F. Olds and his wife Lori of Hinsdale. Also survived by his loving grandchildren, Cody Dapper, Tyler Olds, Rachel Olds, Kaitlyn Olds and Alexis Olds all of Hinsdale, and Averi Olds of Pittsfield. A brother, Wesley Olds of Hinsdale and a sister Virginia Durwin and her husband Paul of Pittsfield. Also survived by nephews, Brian, Michael, Joseph and Nick Durwin and by nieces Jean Caan, Julie Slater and Jo Carrick. His Longtime friend, James "Foxy" Fox and his former wife Diane Fuller Olds. He was predeceased by his great longtime friends, Donald Adams and William Knight. He will be sorely missed by his family, his fire firefighting family, the racing community and his many friends. He was known as a very hard worker and touched the lives of many who knew him.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours for David H. Olds, Sr. will be held Friday, November 30th, 2012 at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main Street, Dalton, MA from 4 to 7 P.M. A Celebration of Life for Dave will be held on Saturday, December 1st at 1:00 PM at the Hinsdale Fire Station on Maple Street. Burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions in his memory be made Hinsdale Volunteer Fireman's Association in care of the funeral home.
