Obituary for Daniel P. O'Handley

DANIEL PATRICK O'HANDLEY, SR., 76, of 56 Tower Road, Dalton, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 3.
Born in New York City on February 21, 1934, he was the son of Ronald and
Elizabeth Kearney O'Handley.
Dan was educated in New York City area schools and after graduating from the former Benjamin Franklin High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably
discharged in 1956 after four years of service.
Dan was employed by Consolidated Edison of New York and by Western Mass.
Electric Company prior to joining Crane & Co. in Dalton as a papermaker. He retired from Crane's after over 33 years of service. At he time of his retirement, he was supervisor of the finishing room for U.S. currency paper at the Wahconah Mill.
Dan was a communicant of St. Agnes Church. He had also been a volunteer fireman for several years with the Dalton Fire Department and a member of the Wahconah Regional High School Booster Club.
Dan loved family first, and enjoyed gardening, reading, his early morning walks on the bike trail with his fellow Crane retirees, and researching the family tree for his
Irish roots, specially so because his mother immigrated as a young woman to this country
from her home in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.
Before his illness, Dan was a familiar figure on his daily walks in the Tower Road
neighborhood with his dog, Tuck.
Dan is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Patricia M. Best, whom he married on June 21, 1958, at St. Agnes Church in Dalton.
He also leaves two sons, Daniel P. O'Handley, Jr., and his wife, Debra, of Dalton and Brian F. O'Handley and his wife, Patricia; of Dalton a daughter, Grace E. McMahon and her husband,
William of Dalton four grandchildren, Patrick O'Handley of Raleigh, N.C., and Caitlin
O'Handley, Cameron McMahon, and Colin McMahon, all of Dalton. He is also survived by a brother, Joseph F. O'Handley of Wilton, Conn., and brother-in-law, Frank C. Best of Wallingford, Conn., and several nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by a brother, Ronald J. O'Handley.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for DANIEL PATRICK O'HANDLEY, SR. will be held
Tuesday, February 8, at 9:15 a.m., from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME with a
Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m., at St. Agnes Church celebrated by Rev.
Geoffrey J. Deeker. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be
Monday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may
