Obituary for Christine A. Derby

CHRISTINE A. DERBY, 66, of 124 Ashuelot Street, Dalton, died early
Wednesday morning, March 25, at home after a brief illness.Christine was born in Pittsfield on February 23, 1943, the daughter of Harold
J. and Doris LaCasse Stengl.
She graduated from the former Dalton High School in 1961, and continued her
education at Berkshire Business School and Mildred Elley, among others.
As a child, she attended St. Agnes Church.
Christine was a clerical employee at General Electric in Pittsfield for many years.
She was a bookkeeper for Berkshire Farm for Boys in New York, Hill Engineering in
Dalton, Kripalu in Lenox, and Frosty Mechanical in Pittsfield.
In additional to her background in business, her most colorful employment was
as an independent trucker, driving from Boston to Chicago. She also worked evenings
"wet sanding" milk trucks in an auto body shop.
One of her favorite positions was that of receptionist at Sugar Hill in Dalton. She
enjoyed talking with the residents and assisting their families.
Christine also worked part-time at the Dalton Library and served a term as Treasurer of the Friends of the Dalton Library. She also served as a member of the Dalton Finance Committee.
She was also a volunteer for the Postal Letter Carriers Food Drive and a volunteer
with the Veteran of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed white water rafting and kayaking, wine tasting, traveling, and the outdoors.
Christine leaves her husband, Paul D. Derby, whom she married August 13, 1989.
She also leaves her brother, Harold J. "Casey" Stengl, of Hinsdale; a sister, Lynn
Cone and her husband, William "Bill" of Naples, Florida and York, Maine;
Christine is also survived by four nieces, Kim Sarmuk and her husband, Peter, of
East Berlin, Connecticut; Nadine Guerin and her husband, Chaz, of Hampton, New
Hampshire, and Cindy Tucker and her husband, Scott, of Hinsdale, and Kemly Derby of
Manhattan, New York; five nephews, Chas Stengl and his wife, Cheryl, of Dalton;
Steve Stengl, and his wife, Cindy, of Dalton; and William E. Cone, III, and his wife,
Heather, of Laconia, New Hampshire, and Travis and Luke Derby of Hinsdale; and ten
great nieces and nephews, Casey and Robbie Sarmuk, Ryan Kevin, Whitney, and Hanna
Stengl, Lindsay, Scott, Mark, and Wyatt Tucker, Melanie and Matthew Guerin, and Will
and Ben Cone. Christine was affectionately known as "The Great" by her nieces and
nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for CHRISTINE A. DERBY, who died Wednesday,
March 25, will be Tuesday, March 31, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Agnes Church, celebrated by
Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, Pastor. Calling hours will be Monday, from 4:00 to 8:00
p.m., at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory
of Mrs. Derby may be made to Friends of the Dalton Free Public Library, Inc., in care of
the Funeral Home, 890 East Main Street, Dalton.
