Obituary for Charles R. Schafer

Charles Rene Schafer, 88, of 1037 Cascade Street, Pittsfield, died Monday, February 13,
2017, at his home. Born in Pittsfield on June 13, 1928, the son of Charles A. and Anna R. Brombach Schafer,
He was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1948 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
On March 28, 1949, Mr. Schafer went to work for the City of Pittsfield where he became Head Gardener in the Department of Parks and Recreation. He retired on October 15, 1987, with 38 years service.
Mr. Schafer was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.
Mr. Schafer was an excellent horticulturalist and received numerous awards for his
cultivations. In addition to being an avid gardener, he enjoyed fishing, and collecting coins and stamps.
Mr. Schafer is survived by cousins, including Kathryn Goerlach of Pittsfield.
He was pre-deceased by his sister, Ann J. Schafer, who died March 4, 2015.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
A graveside service for Charles R. Schafer will be held Friday, February 24, at 1:30 p.m., at St. Joseph's Cemetery (St. Pius X section) with Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, Pastor of St. Joseph Church, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Springside Garden Club
in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
