Obituary for Charles Carter

Charles C. Carter, 91, a longstanding resident of Dalton, died Thursday, April 22, 2021, at Berkshire Medical Center after a short illness.

Mr. Carter was born in Otis, Massachusetts on March 18, 1930, to George and Ella Carter. The family subsequently moved to Dalton when Charles was very young. He attended the Dalton schools until his graduation from Dalton High School in 1948.

Immediately after graduating, Mr. Carter enrolled in the drafting apprenticeship program at the General Electric Company in Pittsfield. His career with that company spanned more than forty years. The bulk of that time was spent in GE's power transformer division, but his final years of service were in the defense sector, where he contributed to the development of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Charles counted skiing, golfing, hunting and gardening among his many hobbies. He was also an avid Red Sox fan, one who was fortunate to see the team win three World Championships. Besides these activities, Mr. Carter served for many years as a commissioner for the Dalton Fire District. He was most proud of his nineteen-year stint as a volunteer member of the Dalton Fire Department, which included both firefighting and ambulance duties. Charles was a long-time communicant of the First Congregational Church of Dalton.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, the former Judith M. Dunbar, as well as their two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul C. and Janet M. Carter of Dalton and Alan C. and Debbie K. Carter of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He also leaves four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Mr. Carter was predeceased by his older brother, Everett, and both of his sisters, Ethel Carter and Doris Niles.

A private, graveside service to celebrate the life of Charles C. Carter will be held at the Ashuelot Street Cemetery in Dalton. Donations in his memory can be made to either the Dalton Ambulance and Rescue Fund or Hospice Care in the Berkshires care of the Dery Funeral Homes-54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
