Obituary for Catherine A. Matthews

Catherine A. Matthews, 74, of 158 Eleanor Road, Pittsfield, died peacefully on
Thursday, January 10, 2013, at her home, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle
with myelodysplastic syndrome. Born in Pittsfield on May 15, 1938, a daughter of Alfred O. and Margaret
Murray Roy, she was educated at Notre Dame School and St. Joseph Central High
School. Mrs. Matthews was a homemaker.
She had, at one time, worked for her father who owned and operated Al's Sanitary
Septic Service.
Mrs. Matthews was a longtime communicant of St. Charles Church.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, who
enjoyed decorating her home for each holiday, as well as cooking and baking and puzzle building.
She leaves her husband of 56 years, Paul V. Matthews, whom she married January 21,
1956, in Notre Dame Church.
Mrs. Matthews is also survived by three daughters, Barbara A. Holden and
her husband, Michael, of New Ashford, JoAnn M. Tesoniero and her husband, Paul,
of Pittsfield, and Nancy A. Filiault and her husband, Brian, of Lanesborough; three
sons, Paul R. Matthews and his wife, Dianne of Pittsfield, Peter A. Matthews of
Pittsfield, and Roy V. Matthews and his wife, Dawn, of Pittsfield; a sister, Teresa Belli
and her husband, Americo, of Pittsfield; fifteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren,
and many nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by two brothers, Alfred J. Roy, Jr., and Joseph A. Roy.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Catherine A. Matthews will be held Tuesday, January 15,
at 9:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at
10:00 a.m., at St. Charles Church celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory, Pastor.
Entombment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in memory of Catherine may be made to St. Charles Church
Memorial Fund or to HospiceCare in The Berkshires, both in care of DERY FUNERAL
HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
The family of Catherine Matthews expresses their deepest appreciation to Dr.
Michael DeLeo, Oncology Nurse Practitioner Sara Bradford,
and the other oncology
nurses and staff at Berkshire Hematology and Oncology, as well as to her Berkshire
Medical Center physicians, nurses, and staff of 5 West.
