Obituary for Carl E. Slater

In Loving Memory, it is with saddened hearts that we announce on Father's Day the death of our beloved father; Carl Edgar Slater, 95, of Pittsfield, who passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at Mount Carmel Care Center Lenox, MA. He was born in Pittsfield on December 25, 1920. Carl was the son of the late Henry and Florence Gildrie Slater. He was the youngest of seven children and educated in Pittsfield Schools.
A toolmaker and mechanic most of his life, Carl started his career at the age of 16. He would love to share stories of his various job experiences from starting out as a gas station mechanic, tool making at General Electric Company and Mold Master Engineering, as well as restoring antique cars. In 1983, Carl retired from Marland Mold at the age of 62.
In addition to building his own home, Carl was very influential when his children and grandchildren were ready to build homes of their own. He was always there to supervise and assist in all aspects of the construction. Carl was well known to be the "neighborhood fixer upper"; repairing lawn mowers, snow blowers, and any small engine that needed repair. He would drop whatever he was doing to go to someone's home and help them when in need. Carl's knowledge, abilities, and expertise were respected and appreciated by all that knew him.
Carl married the love of his life, Laura J. Campagna on November 20, 1941 at Our lady Mount Carmel Church. After 70 years of marriage, Laura predeceased Carl on April 30, 2012.
Carl leaves his devoted children Judy A. Allessio and her husband Francis, David H. Slater and his wife Joyce, and Jeffrey C. Slater and his wife Mary, all of Pittsfield. He also leaves seven grandchildren; Suzanne LaRocque and her husband Steve, Stephanie Ladue and her husband Sam, David Slater and his wife Kristen, Timothy Slater, Brittany G. Slater, and her Fiancé Jeffrey Lyon, Morgan M. Slater and her companion Jason Bliss, and J. Collin Slater as well as five great grandsons: Ryan and Conner LaRocque, Brennan and Liam Lyon, and Cameron Slater. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Carl was predeceased by his 5 sisters, Marie Slater, Rose Poulton, Beatrice Driscoll, Anna Phillips, and Beulah Lawrence, and a brother Charles Slater.
He was also predeceased by his good friend Anthony "Knobbie" Marchetto. Tony and Carl grew up together in the Lakewood Area and then renewed their friendship as retirees. They would spend hours in Carl's garage and "Knobbie's" shop tinkering. After their hard work, they would go inside and be discovered by visitors taking an afternoon nap in the matching reclining chairs in Carl's den.
We wish to extend a very special thank you and express our sincere gratitude to all of the staff at Mount Carmel Care Center; especially the staff members of St. Louise Wing for their wonderful care and devotion.

Funeral Notice: A private funeral service for Carl E. Slater was held on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 with the Rev. Peter Gregory, pastor of St. Charles Church officiating. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery. If so desired, donations can be made in Carl's memory to Mount Carmel Care Center Residents' Fund in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
