Obituary for Carey L. Hinkley

Carey L. Hinkley of Pittsfield died on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, following a brief but courageous battle with ALS. Carey died at home in the close company of his loving family and close friends. He was 67 years old. Carey, the son of Harold and Marion Hinkley, was born in Pittsfield, MA on January 21, 1948. Raised in Pittsfield, he was a 1965 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Following a brief stint at BCC and enlistment in the Coast Guard, Carey began his life's work as a carpenter; a profession and an endeavor that he performed with skill, pride, and determination. During his career, Carey worked for several local construction firms including Emerson Construction and, most notably, David J. Tierney Construction, Inc., where he eventually became a construction supervisor. In the course of his work, Carey worked on, managed and/or supervised construction projects throughout Berkshire County, including, but not limited to, the Hilton/Crowne Plaza, The Clock Tower/Eagle Building, The Central Block, multiple Jiminy Peak buildings including the Crane Lodge, the Pines on Pontoosuc, and the home of the Brattleboro Reformer in Brattleboro, VT. In his later years, he put his decades of construction expertise to work as consultant on the revision of The Colonial Theater and the Beacon Cinema in Pittsfield, MA, and he regularly and generously put his considerable carpentry skills to use at the homes of his many family members and friends. Possessed of both a childlike spirit and a remarkable zest for life, Carey enjoyed an enormously active lifestyle. He was a fine golfer, an excellent bowler (including a television appearance in the mid-70s), an enthusiastic softball player, a dynamic water-skier, an avid downhill skier, an obstacle course/Mud Runner (into and through his mid-60s), and a longtime cyclist. With regard to cycling, Carey regularly rode in the Josh Billings Runaground triathalon, completed a 100-mile Alzheimer's fundraising ride, and was a five time finisher of the PanMass Challenge, a two-day, 200 mile ride/fund-raiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Recreationally, Carey rode nearly 30,000 miles and continued riding through the summer of 2015. Carey was also a lifelong, diehard New York Giants and Boston Red Sox fan; he delighted in discussion of the teams' travails and successes, made regular trips to Giants Stadium and Fenway Park, and traveled with a contingent of Sox fans on the team's 2008 pre-season trip to Japan. Carey was also humbly yet tremendously proud of his sobriety; on January 16, he would have celebrated 17 years of being sober. Carey leaves two sons; Kevin and his partner Amanda Saunders of Pittsfield and Michael and his wife Maureen of Dalton. Two daughters; Melanie Fields and her husband Ryan of Feeding Hills, MA and Sara Barrett and her husband John of Pittsfield. Eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He also leaves his beloved dogs and companions, Bo and Jang. Carey's relationships with his children were a testament to his love for them and of his pride in their accomplishments. Carey was also blessed with countless close and cherished friends. In addition to his warm smile and his kind heart, Carey nurtured deeply rooted relationships with his family and friends; he listened closely when people talked, he shared openly and honestly with those near and dear to him, and, wherever and whenever he was needed, he was there. Moreover, Carey was a kind and gentle dog lover, and he owned and cared for a variety of dogs throughout his life; in short, his dogs were an extension of his family. Carey had a determined work ethic, a warrior's spirit, and the grace of a gentleman. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith. We love you today, Dad, and we will miss you always.
