Obituary for Bertha M. Brewster

Bertha M. Brewster, 95, of 1011 West Housatonic St. Pittsfield died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born on December 25, 1918 in Andover, MA she was the daughter of the late William H. and Amanda Munro Bansley. A longtime Pittsfield resident, she was educated in Pittsfield schools. She married her husband, the late George R. Brewster on March 22, 1941 at First Baptist Church of Pittsfield. He died on December 10, 1978. A homemaker for most of her life, she had worked at one time at the former Hillcrest Hospital and Newberry's Dept. Store. She was a past member of the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield where she taught Sunday School. She was also a captain of the Billie Harris Chapter and past president of the Women's League at First Baptist Church. She was a member of the International Association of Rebekah and served as Post Noble Grand. Mrs. Brewster was also a member of the Daughters of Scotia, Purple Heather Lodge #41 of Pittsfield, and the Lanesboro Grange. For many years she served as a poll worker at the City of Pittsfield Election Polls. She was also very active with the P.T.A. at Stearns School. She enjoyed being with her family and being "Grandma's Taxi". She was an avid reader, excellent cook and a very welcoming person. She also belonged to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. She leaves a son; George O.-W. Brewster and his wife Pamela of Pittsfield. Three daughters; Patricia L. Dufur and her husband Carl with whom she resided of Pittsfield. Donna M. Ellis and her husband Michael of Brandon, FL and Linda E. Sutton of Hobe Sound, FL. Thirteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, nineteen great-great grandchildren, and five step grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister; the late Dorothy E. Steiner and by two brothers; Donald and William Bansley. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law: the late Gary D. Sutton, a granddaughter; Georgina M. Leavy and by her great grandson; David J. Dufur Jr.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Bertha M. Brewster who died January 11, 2014 will be held Tuesday at 9:00 AM at the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert Rennie, chaplain at Hospice Care in the Berkshires. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday, January 13, 2014 from 4 to 7 PM at the Dery Funeral Home. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Brewster will also be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 2 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 235 Dalton Division Road. Memorial donations in memory of Bertha may be made to the Elevator Fund at First Baptist Church of Pittsfield in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
