Obituary for Bernard A. Smith, Sr.

Bernard Alfred Smith, Sr., 89, of Dalton, MA, died February 17, 2021 at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on January 9, 1932, he was the son of the late Neil and Thelma Eldridge Smith. He attended Dalton schools and was a 1949 graduate of Dalton High School.

Mr. Smith married the former Jean Ann Lyman on October 8, 1955 at St. Agnes Church in Dalton. He was employed by Crane and Company for 35 years, having worked in the quality control lab and the research and development department.

A communicant of St. Agnes Church, Mr. Smith was a member of the Dalton Historical Society and a member of the Friends of the Dalton Historic Cemeteries, Inc. He was a LEGO toy fanatic and enjoyed camping in his motorhome.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean Ann Smith, their children, Alan N. Smith and wife Mary of Pittsfield, Bernard A. Smith, Jr., and wife Bonnie of Niskayuna, NY, and Donna M. Bishop and husband Richard of Lanesborough. Eight beloved grandchildren, Benjamin, Christopher, Matthew, Linda, Justin, Jessica, Rebecca and Michael, and four and a half great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Smith.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held, TUESDAY, February 23, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be held, MONDAY February 22, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 E. Main St, Dalton, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Heart Association or to the Dalton Senior Center in care of the funeral home.
