Obituary for Arthur F. Smith, Jr.

Arthur F. Smith, Jr., 92, of North Adams, passed away February 21, 2022 at his home.
Born in Pittsfield, MA, on April 27, 1929, he was the son of Arthur F. and Emma F. (Harvey) Smith.

He loved to talk about attending a one-room schoolhouse in Lanesborough, MA. He completed his primary education in various other schools, graduating from Vineland (NJ) High School in 1947.

Mr. Smith married the former Mary Ann Norton on April 12, 1969. She predeceased him in January of 2018. He was also predeceased by four of his five sisters.

Art was a United States Air Force Veteran, having served during the Korean War. He was very proud of his military service, and often told stories of his travels and the friends he made.

After leaving the military, Mr. Smith worked at and ran small print shops. He was then employed by Eaton Paper Company, where he was the superintendent of printing. For a number of years, he ran his own personalized stationery business, Artsmiths, Inc., then worked at Brett-Forer Greetings. After his retirement from printing, he owned and operated Pet Outfitters and truly enjoyed interacting with his customers and their pets. He was an avid supporter of the Berkshire Humane Society, serving for a time on its Board of Directors. He also immensely enjoyed writing letters to the editor of the Berkshire Eagle.

He is survived by his daughter, Alicia Smith and her life partner, David M. Thomas of Dalton; his sister, Patricia A. Smith of North Adams; several nieces, nephews and friends.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside services with military honors will be held in the Spring in St. Josephs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
