Obituary for Alice M. Monahan

Mrs. Alice M. Monahan, 70, of 20 Winter Street, Pittsfield died Friday evening at home. Born on July 15, 1938 in Charlestown, MA she was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Higgins Sullivan. A longtime resident of Pittsfield, she was educated in Charlestown, MA and New York schools and graduated from high school in 1955. She was also a graduate of the nursing program at Berkshire Community College where she received her nursing degree at the age of fifty. A licensed practical nurse, she was employed at various hospitals and nursing homes in Berkshire County including Edgecombe Nursing Home in Lenox and Craneville Place of Dalton which she retired from in 2005. She had also worked at one time at the former Rice Silk Mill as a proof operator. She was a communicant of the former St. Mary of the Morning Star Church. She enjoyed bingo, playing Keno and being with her family and grandchildren. She was an avid New York Yankee fan. She leaves her husband, James C. Monahan of Pittsfield whom she married in 1961. A daughter, Barbara A. Wilson of North Adams and two sons; James E. Monahan of Pittsfield and John C. Monahan and his wife Gina of Pittsfield. She also leaves her former son-in-law; Jeffrey D. Wilson Sr. of Adams. Two sisters; Margaret Court and her husband Edward of Pittsfield and Agnes Dillon and her husband James of Port Orange, FL. She also leaves her brother-in-law, Robert Whipple and his wife Ann of North Adams. She will be greatly missed by her seven grandchildren; Kara, Amy, Jesse and Kyle Wilson, Dakota Robitaille and Jonathan and Dylan Monahan and her four great-grandchildren; Lillian Wilson, Damon Nicholls whom she raised for the past four years, Ethan Nicholls her godson, and Logan Terrien. She was predeceased by a daughter; the late Mary Monahan who died in 1964 and by three sisters; Mary Ellen Sullivan, Katherine Whipple and Geraldine Glover and by her beloved Boston terrier, "Spot". She also leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends and many of her children's friends who called her "Ma" and her grandchildren's friends who called her "Gram".. She also leaves her beloved Hospice Care of Western MA caregivers; Carmen, Rachelle, Gina and Dennis.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Alice M. Monahan, 70, of Pittsfield who died January 16, 2009 will be held Tuesday at 6:30 PM at the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield conducted by Monsignor Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph Church. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Western MA or to the Massachusetts General Hospital Neurology Intensive Care Unit both in care of the funeral home.
