Obituary for Alfred L. Shogry

Alfred Louis Shogry, 85, of Pittsfield, died Monday, March 27, 2017, at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke.
Born in Pittsfield on February 27, 1932, the son of Louis M. and Bessie Raby Shogry. He was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mr. Shogry served with the United States Army Reserves. He was called to active duty on November 12, 1953 for service in Korea, and was honorably discharged on September 15, 1955 as a Technical Sergeant.
He was employed by General Electric Company as a stock chaser in production control for thirty eight years.
Mr. Shogry was involved with organized labor and the community for more than thirty
years. In that time, he was a member, steward, president and part of national negotiating committee for International Union of Electric Workers Local 254, President of the Berkshire Central Labor Council, Vice President of the Mass. AFL/CIO, Vice President of the Berkshire Regional Employment Board, Board Member of the Berkshire Economic Development Commission, Pittsfield Personnel Review Board, Member of the Airport Commission, Board of Directors of the Greylock Federal Credit Union, and Deputy Sheriff under Henry Como.
A self-taught builder, he built sheds and tiled kitchens and bathrooms. He also found time to garden, and cook, especially making his own chicken soup, tabbouli, and spaghetti
sauce. In his younger years, he was quite the softball player and bowler.
Most and best of all, Mr. Shogry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Mr. Shogry leaves his wife of 63 years, the former Beverly Ann Watson, whom he married July 25, 1953.
He is also survived by his daughter, Theresa A. "Terry" Dushane and her husband Ret.
Lt. Col. Gordon A. Dushane, Jr. (who served with the Air National Guard) of West Springfield; two grandchildren, Michael Dushane and his wife, Jennifer, of Royersford, Penn. and Mark Dushane of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two great grandchildren, June and Mason Alexander.
He was pre-deceased by his son, Frederick Michael Shogry, who died in 1980; his nine
siblings, Albert, Edward, Richard, Louis and Theodore, Katherine Caron, Louise George, Helen
George, and Mildred Billings; brothers-in-law, William Watson, Anthony Carmona, Fred
George, Alfred George, William Caron, and Roy Billings.
The family would like to acknowledge and express their appreciation to the staff of
Craneville Place of Dalton, as well as the staff at Hospice Services of Western and Central
Massachusetts for the kind and compassionate care given to Mr. Shogry. A heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke. A special thanks to Mary and Mark Hayer, their visits were a ray of sunshine to him.


FUNERAL NOTICE:
Funeral services for Alfred Louis Shogry will be held Monday, April 3, at 9:15 a.m.
from DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart
Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Soldier On or to the Holyoke
Soldiers Home both in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
