Obituary for Alfred M. "Fred" Goerlach, Jr.

Alfred Milton Goerlach Jr. was born on November 28, 1952, in the small town of Hollywood, FL, just north of Miami. Fred (as he was known to his friends and family) passed away peacefully, on April 10, 2022 at Berkshire Medical Center due to complications from a stroke.

Fred spent his early childhood years living on the Atlantic coast of Florida. The family then relocated to Pittsfield (Wilson Projects) and then moved to Hinsdale. Fred attended Kittredge and Dalton Junior High before graduating from Wahconah Regional H. S. in 1971. Fred held various jobs throughout his life: Pittsfield’s City Water Department, General Electric, Polson Electric, Mohawk Beverage, and local golf courses. He was an enthusiastic musician in his younger years playing in local bands and later providing sound engineering for many Berkshire based musicians.

Fred was a lover of golf and hockey, happiest when he was out on the course. He was almost late for his own wedding because he was playing golf that morning… Over his lifetime, he had been a member of Wahconah, Worthington, and Berkshire Hills. He played (and placed) in many local tournaments. One of his proudest achievements was winning the 1st Division in the Little Brown Jug in 1974 and then the 4th Division in 2020 (where he got a hole in one). His greatest pride was helping improve people’s golf games (especially younger folks), from coaching high school & college golf, working on golf clubs, or giving instructions on how to improve their golf swing.

He is survived by a loving family: his wife; the former Deborah Bartlett of Liverpool, NY whom he married in September 1997. His former wife, Lisa Gladu, and their two daughters: Sara (Patrick) Delaney of Middlefield, and Eliza (Adam) Dragon of Cummington. He leaves four grandchildren; Michal, Aurelia, Saebra, and Julia. He also leaves two sisters: Heidi G. Cornwell of Nassau, NY and Rothann L. Goerlach of Pittsfield. He was predeceased by his brother Michael.

His family would like to thank Dr. Mullaly and the ‘girls’ on the 4th floor of the Cancer Center on Tor Street. They were amazing while he was going through cancer treatments during the pandemic. The family would also like to thank everyone for their support this past year after the stroke. You, and Pastor Scott, helped Fred and Debbie make it through extremely dark times.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Celebration of Life for Fred will be held Saturday, April 30 from 1 - 4 pm at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield. A graveside service will be held at the family plot in Windsor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Fred may be made to the Francis Ouimet Scholarship (www.ouimet.org).
