Obituary for Jon David Burno

Jon David Burno, 56, passed away due to complications from cerebral aneurysms in Hanover, Germany on July 5, 2017.
Jon was born in Pittsfield on August 15, 1960, a son of Dr. Frank and Patricia (Thayer) Burno. He attended Pittsfield public schools and was a 1978 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He graduated from Penn State University in 1982 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
He was a career-long employee of United Technologies/Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut. Initially he worked on jet engine design and in 1995 he was awarded a U.S. patent for a gear drive system. For the past 20 years, Jon has been a Field Manager for UT/Pratt and Whitney, with assignments in Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and, most recently, Hanover, Germany.
As a youth, he was an avid swimmer. In 1974, he was the co-winner of the Jon Bennet Memorial Trophy for outstanding swimmer at the YMCA swim league, and in 1975 he won the Patrick Trottier Memorial Trophy for swimmer of the year at the Pittsfield Boy Club and served as co-captain of the swim team. Jon also served as a life guard at Pontoosuc Lake during the summers.
Jon also loved skiing, biking, golf and running, recently completing the 2017 Hanover Half Marathon. When in Singapore, he would cross over into Malaysia to play golf with a friend.
Jon had a wonderful sense of humor and a love of adventure. He was generous and was greatly admired by his colleagues and clients in every country where he worked. He maintained devoted friendships throughout the world, including his high school friends who meet annually on Cape Cod.
Jon is survived by his loving wife, Yukari Fukushima Burno, whom he married in Japan on April 9, 2004, and with whom he traveled many places in the world for thirteen years. He is also survived by his parents; his sisters, Dr. Susan Palmgren and her husband, Mark; Tracy Cole and her husband, Henry; his brothers, Mark Burno and his wife, Alicia; Matthew Burno and his wife, Pamela; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held for Jon at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the First Baptist Church, 88 South Street, Pittsfield, MA.
In lieu of flowers, his family encourages you to honor Jon by hugging your children, spending time with your family, and cherishing your time together.
